Why Calgary homes go dry in winter
A furnace heats the air, and heated air carries its moisture differently. Across a long Calgary heating season the relative humidity indoors falls, and the house starts telling you about it. The proper humidity level for an average home is between thirty-five and forty-five percent. Below thirty-five percent, a humidifier is what brings it back up.

The most neglected appliance in the house
Homeowners keep an eye on the furnace, the air conditioner and the water heater. The humidifier sitting beside them gets forgotten — no cleaning, no filter change, no annual service. Water panels scale up, float valves corrode and solenoid valves seize. A humidifier that has stopped working does not announce it. The air simply goes dry, and most people put it down to the season.
Humidifier or dehumidifier — which do you need?
Humidifiers add moisture to indoor air when humidity falls below thirty-five percent. Dehumidifiers remove moisture when humidity rises above fifty percent. Which one you need depends on the season, how many people live in the home, and what the air is doing right now. The free in-home assessment measures it rather than guessing.
Whole-home humidifiers
Installed directly on the furnace, a whole-home humidifier adds moisture to the air as it circulates through the ductwork, holding the same level in every room at once. No tanks to refill and no portable units to move around.

Dehumidifiers

Skin and static
Dry air pulls moisture out of skin and lets static build until everything you touch gives you a shock and fabrics cling. Holding the air in range keeps skin comfortable and stops the charge from accumulating.
Wood and furniture
Hardwood floors crack, furniture joints loosen and pianos drift out of tune in dry air. Holding thirty-five to forty-five percent through the winter stops wood swinging between swelling and shrinking.
How warm the house feels
Air at a balanced humidity feels warmer than dry air at the same temperature. You can be comfortable without pushing the thermostat higher, which takes some of the load off the furnace.
Balanced air, every room
Optimal humidity levels soothe dry, irritated skin and reduce the static electricity that dry air produces. They also preserve wood floors and furniture, preventing damage and keeping their appearance through the year as temperatures swing.
Dry air is uncomfortable to sleep in. A bedroom held at a balanced humidity is an easier room to settle in overnight, and it stays that way as the outdoor temperature moves around.

What humidity level should a Calgary home sit at?
Between thirty-five and forty-five percent for an average home. Below thirty-five percent, a humidifier is what brings it back up. Above fifty percent, a dehumidifier is the right tool — most often in a basement or through a warm, damp stretch of summer.
How often does a whole-home humidifier need servicing?
Once a year, at the start of the heating season. The water panel collects mineral scale from Calgary’s water and is replaced. The solenoid valve and the float assembly are checked at the same time — those are the parts that fail quietly, with no sign except air that has gone dry.
Can a whole-home humidifier go on any furnace?
In most cases, yes. Bypass models work with single and two-stage furnaces, and need a water supply connection plus a connection to the supply and return ducts. Fan-powered models have slightly different requirements. We confirm compatibility with your system before installation.
My humidifier runs but the air still seems dry. Why?
Most often a solenoid valve that no longer opens to let water through, a water panel clogged with scale, or a humidistat set wrong. It can also be undersized for the volume of air in the house. We diagnose on site and give you a written price for repair or replacement before anything is done.
Will a whole-home humidifier raise my energy bill?
The unit itself uses very little. Balanced humidity also makes the same temperature feel warmer, so the heating does not have to work as hard to keep the house comfortable.
Does a humidifier reduce static electricity?
Yes. Static builds up in dry air. Adding moisture stops the charge accumulating, which is why the shocks and the clinging fabrics stop once the air is back in range.
Is a whole-home unit better than a portable one?
A whole-home unit holds the same humidity everywhere and does not need refilling. A portable unit covers one room and has to be topped up and cleaned. If only one room is a problem, a portable unit is the cheaper answer.
Is the installation disruptive?
The unit goes on the furnace, with a water line run to it and a wire to the humidistat. It is usually a half day or less. We confirm a two-hour arrival window with you before the visit.
Can a humidifier cause mould?
It can, if it is set too high or left uncalibrated — that is what excess moisture does. Held in the thirty-five to forty-five percent range it does not. Setting that range is part of the installation and it is checked again at the annual service.
